Servers using multimode fiber optic interfaces are optimized for short-distance, high-speed connections within data centers or enterprise networks.Purpose and ApplicationsA multimode fiber optic interface on a server allows it to transmit and receive data over multimode fiber (MMF), which supports multiple light paths through a larger core diameter (typically 50–62.5 µm) for short-reach communication . This setup is ideal for rack-to-rack, row-to-row, or intra-building connections where long-distance transmission is unnecessary . Multimode fiber is commonly used in data centers, campus networks, and enterprise environments because it balances high data rates, cost efficiency, and ease of deployment .Multimode Fiber TypesMultimode fiber comes in several standardized types, each with different bandwidth and distance capabilities :OM1: 62.5 µm core, supports 1G Ethernet up to 275 m and 10G up to 33 m.OM2: 50 µm core, supports 1G Ethernet up to 550 m and 10G up to 33 m.OM3/OM4: 50 µm core, laser-optimized for 10G–40G Ethernet, with OM4 supporting longer distances than OM3.OM5: Supports wideband multimode applications and higher-speed data rates for future-proof deployments. Most modern servers use OM3 or OM4 for 10G–40G short-reach connections, while older infrastructures may still use OM1 or OM2 .SFP Transceivers and ConnectorsServers typically use SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) transceivers to interface with multimode fiber. These modules convert electrical signals from the server into optical signals and vice versa .
