How to coil up a large optical cable

How to coil up a large optical cable

Coil large-diameter optical cables using gentle figure-eight or large-radius loops, always respecting the cable's minimum bend radius and tension limits to prevent damage.Key PrinciplesRespect the Minimum Bend Radius: Never coil a cable tighter than its specified minimum bend radius. For large-diameter fiber optic cables, the working bend radius is typically 15 times the cable diameter during installation, and the installed bend radius is slightly smaller but still critical to avoid microbending or signal loss (Corning) . Avoid Excessive Tension: Large optical cables are sensitive to pulling forces. For example, stranded loose tube and ribbon cables have maximum pulling tensions around 600 lbF (2,700 N). Exceeding this can damage the fibers internally . Use Figure-Eight Coiling for Long Lengths: For cables longer than 100 ft (30 m), a figure-eight coil is recommended. Each loop should be 5–8 ft (1.5–2.4 m) in diameter, and the total coil length around 15 ft (4.5 m). This method reduces torsion and prevents twisting that can damage the fibers . Gentle Handling: Always allow the cable to maintain its natural curve. Avoid forcing the cable into tight loops or using automated coiling machines that may exceed torsion or bend limits, especially for armored or central tube designs . Use Reels or Spools for Very Long Cables: For lengths over 250 ft, using a cable reel or spool simplifies handling, reduces stress, and ensures consistent coil size . Securing the Coil: When storing or installing, secure the coil to a solid structure such as a manhole wall, messenger wire, or reel to prevent movement and accidental damage . Optional Aids: For figure-eight coiling, traffic cones or cardboard shims can help maintain loop spacing and relieve pressure at crossovers .Step-by-Step Figure-Eight CoilingLay out the cable on a flat surface with enough space for loops.Form the first loop in one direction, keeping the cable's natural curve.Cross the cable to form the second loop in the opposite direction, creating the figure-eight pattern.Repeat until the entire length is coiled.Secure the coil with straps or ties, ensuring no loops are pinched or twisted. By following these practices, you can safely coil large-diameter optical cables, maintain signal integrity, and prevent mechanical damage during storage or installation .
