Electro-optical modules are widely used in data centers, mobile communication base stations, passive wavelength division systems, storage networks, and 5G transport networks to convert electrical signals to optical signals and enable high-speed data transmission.Data CentersElectro-optical modules are essential in data centers for server-to-server, server-to-switch, and inter-data center communications. They support high-speed data transfer for cloud services, email, video streaming, and internal data storage and processing. Modules are categorized based on connection type: from the data center to users, between data centers, and within the data center itself. High-speed modules are critical for internal communications, which account for over 70% of data center traffic, and they help achieve higher transmission rates, lower power consumption, and miniaturization of switching equipment .Mobile Communication Base StationsIn mobile networks, optical modules connect Remote Radio Units (RRUs) and Baseband Units (BBUs). For 4G networks, modules with rates of 1.25G, 2.5G, 6G, and 10G are commonly used. In 5G networks, higher-speed modules (25G, 50G, 100G, 200G, 400G) are deployed to support CPRI, eCPRI, Ethernet, and OTN protocols. Modules must withstand industrial temperature ranges (-40°C to +85°C) and outdoor conditions, especially for front-haul applications .Passive Wavelength Division SystemsCWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) and DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) modules are used to multiplex multiple optical signals over a single fiber, saving fiber resources. CWDM modules are cost-effective for short- and medium-distance transmission (10–40 km), while DWDM modules support higher capacity over longer distances. These modules are installed in switches and connected to multiplexers or optical add-drop multiplexers (OADMs) using patch cables .SAN/NAS Storage NetworksStorage networks rely on optical modules for high-speed data access and management. SAN networks use Fibre Channel optical modules to support the FC protocol, while NAS networks use Ethernet-based modules. Modules connect servers, storage devices, and switches, ensuring reliable and efficient data transfer in enterprise storage environments .5G Transport Networks5G networks require optical modules for fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul connections. Modules support high-speed transmission using NRZ, PAM4, and DMT modulation formats. Existing 25G optical devices can be upgraded with PAM4 technology to double bandwidth. Optical modules are critical for connecting devices across metropolitan access, aggregation, and core layers, enabling high-capacity, low-latency 5G services .SummaryElectro-optical modules are versatile components that enable high-speed, reliable, and scalable communication across multiple industries.
