Principle and Function of Thermometric Grating Fiber

Principle and Function of Thermometric Grating Fiber

Thermometric grating fibers, such as Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), measure temperature by detecting shifts in the wavelength of light reflected from periodic refractive index variations within the fiber.PrincipleThermometric grating fibers operate based on the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) principle, where a periodic modulation of the refractive index is inscribed along a segment of the optical fiber core . This periodic structure acts as a wavelength-specific reflector, reflecting light at a particular Bragg wavelength while transmitting other wavelengths. The Bragg wavelength is determined by the grating period and the effective refractive index of the fiber core. When the fiber experiences a temperature change, the grating period and refractive index shift due to thermal expansion and the thermo-optic effect, causing a measurable shift in the reflected wavelength . This shift is directly correlated with temperature, allowing precise thermal measurements.FunctionThe primary function of thermometric grating fibers is temperature sensing. By monitoring the wavelength shift of the reflected light, the sensor can determine the exact temperature at the grating location . These sensors are widely used in environments where traditional resistance thermometers are limited, such as in high electromagnetic interference areas, extreme temperatures, or mechanically sensitive locations. FBG-based thermometers offer several advantages:High sensitivity and accuracy: Capable of detecting small temperature changes with uncertainties around ±0.5 K in controlled environments .Immunity to electromagnetic interference: Optical fibers are not affected by electrical noise, making them suitable for industrial and aerospace applications .Compact and lightweight: Can be embedded into structures or materials for structural health monitoring while simultaneously measuring temperature .Multiplexing capability: Multiple gratings can be inscribed along a single fiber, allowing distributed temperature sensing over long distances .Types of Gratings for ThermometryFiber Bragg Grating (FBG): Reflects a narrow band of wavelengths; commonly used for precise temperature and strain measurements .Long Period Grating (LPG): Couples light from the core to the cladding, sensitive to environmental changes, but less commonly used for high-precision temperature sensing . In summary, thermometric grating fibers function by converting temperature-induced physical changes in the fiber into optical wavelength shifts, providing a robust, precise, and versatile method for temperature measurement in challenging environments.
