Fiber optic sensors are classified into intrinsic, extrinsic, hybrid, intensity-based, polarization-based, chemical, physical, and biomedical types, each designed for specific sensing applications.Classification by Sensing LocationIntrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors: The sensing occurs within the fiber itself. The fiber acts as the sensing element, and environmental changes such as strain, temperature, or pressure directly modulate the light traveling through it. These sensors are capable of distributed sensing over long distances and are widely used in structural health monitoring and industrial applications .Extrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors: The fiber primarily transmits light to and from an external transducer. The modulation occurs outside the fiber, and the fiber serves as a conduit for the optical signal.
