How to Choose a Fiber Optic Splice

Fusion splicing is generally preferred for permanent, high-performance connections, while mechanical splicing is suitable for temporary or quick field deployments; the choice of splice closure—dome, horizontal, or modular—depends on installation environment, cable type, and maintenance needs.Fiber Splice TypesFusion Splicing: This method uses an electric arc to fuse two fiber ends into a single, seamless connection. It offers extremely low signal loss (often below 0.1 dB), high reliability, and long-term durability, making it ideal for long-haul, high-bandwidth networks such as DWDM, metro, and backbone deployments . Fusion splices are more resilient to environmental stressors like temperature changes and vibration. Mechanical Splicing: This method aligns fiber ends using a small device and index-matching gel. It is faster and easier to perform in the field, but typically results in higher signal loss and is less permanent. Mechanical splices are suitable for temporary connections, emergency repairs, or low-priority links .Fiber Splice ClosuresDome (Vertical) Closures: Cylindrical or dome-shaped enclosures with top/bottom cable entry. They provide 360° protection against environmental hazards, including UV, wind, and soil pressure. Ideal for underground, aerial, and manhole installations, supporting fiber counts from 12 up to 288 single fusion splices. Dome closures save space in crowded ducts and are robust for harsh outdoor conditions . Horizontal (In-Line) Closures: Rectangular, flat-profile enclosures with side-by-side fiber entry/exit ports. Horizontal closures streamline cable routing and reduce bending loss but require more horizontal space, making them less suitable for compact indoor environments . Modular Closures: These offer flexible configurations for expanding networks and can accommodate multiple cable types and splicing trays.
