The three primary Fibre Channel topologies are Point-to-Point (FC-P2P), Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL), and Switched Fabric (FC-SW), each offering distinct connectivity, bandwidth, and scalability characteristics.1. Point-to-Point (FC-P2P)Point-to-Point topology is the simplest Fibre Channel configuration, where two devices are directly connected via a dedicated link, typically using Node ports on each device . Key Features:Provides dedicated bandwidth between the two devices, ensuring high-speed data transfer.Simple and inexpensive to implement.Limited scalability, as each connection only supports two devices.Commonly used for direct host-to-storage connections or small-scale SANs .2. Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL)Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop connects devices in a ring or loop configuration, where each device transmits data to the next in sequence . Key Features:Shared bandwidth among all devices on the loop; only two devices can communicate at a time.Supports up to 127 devices, though practical implementations usually limit to 10–15 devices for efficiency.Devices are identified by Arbitrated Loop Physical Address (AL_PA).Adding or removing a device can interrupt loop activity, and a single device failure may break the loop unless a hub is used to bypass failed ports.Historically popular but less common in modern SANs due to bandwidth sharing limitations .3. Switched Fabric (FC-SW)Switched Fabric topology uses Fibre Channel switches to interconnect multiple devices or loops, allowing simultaneous communication between multiple nodes .
