Single-core and dual-core multimode fiber

Single-core and dual-core multimode fiber

Multimode fiber is available in both single-core and dual-core versions, with additional multi-core variants also possible.Core Options in Multimode FiberSingle-core multimode fiber is the most common type, featuring a single light-transmitting channel within the fiber. This design allows multiple light modes to propagate simultaneously through the same core, making it suitable for short-distance, high-bandwidth applications such as data centers and enterprise networks . Dual-core multimode fiber (also referred to as 2-core fiber) contains two separate cores within the same fiber structure. Each core can independently transmit light, effectively doubling the data-carrying capacity compared to a single-core fiber. Dual-core fibers are less common than single-core fibers but are used in specialized applications where increased throughput or redundancy is required . Multi-core fibers extend this concept further, containing three or more cores arranged in various geometries, such as rings or grids. Each core functions as an independent waveguide, allowing multiple simultaneous data channels. Multi-core multimode fibers are often used in advanced optical communication systems, including space-division multiplexing, to significantly increase network capacity .Practical ConsiderationsTransmission Distance: Multimode fibers, whether single-core or dual-core, are generally optimized for short-reach applications due to modal dispersion, which limits bandwidth over longer distances .Compatibility: Network equipment and transceivers must match the fiber type and core configuration. For example, a dual-core multimode fiber requires compatible dual-channel transceivers .Cost and Deployment: Single-core multimode fibers are widely available and cost-effective, while dual-core and multi-core fibers are more specialized and may involve higher costs and more complex installation . In summary, multimode fiber can come in single-core, dual-core, and multi-core versions, with single-core being the standard for most short-distance applications, dual-core used for higher capacity or redundancy, and multi-core fibers employed in advanced high-capacity optical networks .
