Hot aisle computer room construction process

Hot aisle computer room construction process

Hot aisle containment (HAC) involves arranging server racks back-to-back and installing physical barriers to isolate hot exhaust air, improving cooling efficiency and energy savings.Step 1: Rack ArrangementThe first step in constructing a hot aisle is to line up server racks in alternating rows with the backs of the racks facing each other, forming a dedicated hot air corridor . This ensures that all hot air exhausts are directed into the same aisle, preventing mixing with cold air supplied to the front of the racks.Step 2: Containment Barrier InstallationOnce the racks are positioned, a physical containment system is installed to trap the hot air. Options include:Vinyl curtains for simple, cost-effective solutionsModular walls and ceilings for more permanent installationsPre-fabricated steel frame modules with doors and service support beams for high-density setups These barriers guide the hot air upward toward the AC return system, often using the ceiling void or ducting to the CRAC units .Step 3: Integration with Cooling SystemsThe contained hot air is either exhausted from the data center or returned to the CRAC units for cooling . Hot aisle containment allows higher return air temperatures, which increases free cooling opportunities and reduces energy consumption. Adjustments may include:Raising chilled water setpointsLowering AC fan speedsOptimizing temperature and humidity setpoints Step 4: Access and Safety ConsiderationsPre-fabricated modules often include doors and bespoke ironmongery to control access to the hot aisle . This reduces on-site labor, minimizes working at height, and ensures a safer environment for maintenance personnel.Step 5: Performance VerificationAfter installation, the system should be tested to ensure:Temperature differentials across racks are minimizedHot spots are eliminatedCooling efficiency is improved, often by 30% or more Energy savings are realized through higher server inlet temperatures and reduced cooling load BenefitsImplementing hot aisle containment provides:Improved cooling efficiencyReduced energy consumptionExtended equipment lifespanEnhanced operational reliability By following these steps, a computer room can achieve a controlled environment where hot and cold air streams are fully separated, maximizing both performance and energy efficiency.
