Fiber optic connector coupler matching gel reduces optical loss by matching the refractive index between mated fibers, improving signal transmission and minimizing reflections.Purpose and FunctionFiber optic matching gel, also known as index-matching gel, is applied at the interface of two mated fibers in mechanical splices or connectors. Its primary function is to minimize optical loss by reducing the difference in refractive index between the fiber cores and the gap between them. Without the gel, air gaps (refractive index ≈ 1) cause light reflection and scattering, leading to signal attenuation. The gel fills these gaps, allowing light to pass through with minimal reflection and insertion loss .Types of Matching GelNon-curing gels: These are stable, clear gels that remain fluid-like and can be reused. They consist of an optical fluid and a thickener, providing high optical clarity with absorption loss less than 0.0005% per micron of path length. Non-curing gels are shear-thinning, meaning they flow easily when applied but remain in place once the shear force is removed .Curing gels: These gels harden after application, forming a permanent optical interface.
