Fiber optic patch cords are classified by fiber type and grade, including single-mode (OS1/OS2) and multimode (OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, OM5), each suited for specific distances and bandwidth requirements.Single-Mode Fiber GradesSingle-mode fibers have a narrow core (9/125 µm) allowing light to travel in a single path, minimizing signal distortion over long distances. The main grades are:OS1: Indoor single-mode fiber, optimized for short-distance applications within buildings, with low attenuation (≤ 1 dB/km at 1310 nm) .OS2: Outdoor or long-haul single-mode fiber, suitable for distances up to 120 km or more, with extremely low attenuation (≤ 0.35 dB/km at 1310 nm) . OS2 is the industry standard for telecom and long-distance networks.Multimode Fiber GradesMultimode fibers have a larger core (50–62.5 µm) allowing multiple light paths, which increases modal dispersion but is cost-effective for short-distance, high-bandwidth applications.
